Who requires a student visa?
A study visa will likely be required to study in Italy, for any length of time.

Please contact the nearest Consulate for further information about necessary visas and documentation.
 

 

What documents will be required?
One passport size photograph;
One application form duly completed and signed at the Consulate;
Passport valid three months over planned stay in Italy
A letter of acceptance from school or University in Italy indicating place, duration of the course and dates of attendance;
A letter addressed to this Italian Consulate, stating that you own private means of support. If you are a recipient of financial aid, please submit a statement
A letter from your bank indicating your account number, financial status, and balance. The letter must be signed by a bank official
Flight reservations (round trip)

Note: Health Insurance Proof of Health Insurance must be shown to the competent local authorities in Italy (Questura) in order to obtain your residency permit (Permesso di Soggiorno). A Health Insurance Policy can be purchased on arrival in Italy at the Post Office, from Inassitalia, that is specially designed by the Italian Government for foreign students to cover all medical expenses without disbursing any money in case of illness.

Other information: 
Minors(under 18 years of age) who will not be travelling with their parents and wish to apply for a visa, in addition to the documentation required for the particular visa, must produce a declaration from both parents or legal guardian, authorising them to travel and stay in a Schengen country and appointing the person who will be responsible for them.
This declaration should be in the form of an affidavit duly authenticated by the solicitor or the appropriate official of your Embassy or Consulate

Over three months stay: people who want to study in Italy must present personally to the Embassy or Consulate to apply for a study visa.

The documents required are:

  1. a valid passport
  2. a certificate of enrolment from the school
  3. a declaration of available finances, sufficient to maintain the student during the period of study in Italy, authorized and registered by a public notary
  4. a letter (and a copy) from the bank indicating the relevant account numbers of the student or that of the parents, attesting to the student’s financial situation
  5. an internationally valid health insurance policy

One year stay: if students intend to stay in Italy for study reasons they must apply, before they leave, for a study visa type D according to the length of the studies. The Visa can be issued for a maximum stay of 365 days (one year).

Longer period stay: if students wish to study in Italy for longer periods (at universities or professional schools) they must apply before they leave for a study visa type D (365 days). It must be renewed in Italy each year with a multi-year certificate for study in Italy (pluriennale).
